Constipation is a very common concern among the moms of toddlers. Some of the common causes of constipation in toddlers are toilet anxiety, dehydration and diet. Swati’s two and half your old child has the problem and she came to SOS moms for their advice on the same. Let’s take a look at what our SOS moms have to say to Swati.
Moms Noopur Agarwal, Sowjanaya Kumar, Tanuja Karunakar, Anita Rankar, Shaveta Rahajan, Ritu Mishra Tripathi Sahrvani Aneel, Leena Parikh, Ameena Sayeed, Deepshikha Das, Sakshi Batra, Tanushree Ganguli and Sayonee Mishra all agree that Swati’s little one should be given ripe bananas and papaya in different forms to ease his problem. Both banana and papaya are rich in fibre and can help with constipation. These two fruits can also be given in the form of milk shakes, juice and any other form to make them seem less boring to your active bub.
Also moms like Tanushree Ganguli, Jyoti Kapil, Mridula Shirwali, agree that spinach and greens will help Swati’s child to a great extent.
Moms Sneha Satam, Sathya Ramu, Srividya Mushunuru suggest Swati to feed that the child should be fed black raisins soaked in water every morning. Chetana Suvarana Ganatara suggests that a porridge made of oats and prunes (packed with fibre) will help. Shanti Gupta says dried figs soaked in water overnight will also work wonders.
Preeti Khanna and Manasi Joshi suggest that the little one should be given milk with two drops of ghee in it. Milk may cause constipation but milk with ghee has a reverse impact. Sweta Bharadwaj, Sonia Sonu pipe in with their suggestion of feeding the tot with curd regularly.
Diana Samuel says, “Try 1/2 tsp honey in 1/2 tsp warm water on empty stomach in the morning. It worked for my child when she had severe constipation. Note: water must be warm not too hot nor cold. Give him lots of warm water throughout the day. Hope it might help.” Harsha Rajiv suggests, “ Water intake should be increased. Fruit juice, fresh fruits in puree form is also effective. Fibrous food like palak and other greens in soup can be given. Also Palak kichdi, carrot soup, carrot milkshake etc work. Do include greens in your baby’s diet at least once a week.
Other SOS moms also agree that Swati’s little one should be given warm water throughout the day in equal intervals. Also the child should be made to sit on his potty seat everyday even if he doesn’t pass stool to build a habit. Constipation can be easily resolved with a few key changes in diet and momma’s care of course!

It is crazy to go back to work after maternity leaves. Like, the last time your coworkers saw you, you had a happy baby bump,but now, you’re all flat out, dark circles and all. We feel you fellow mommas, we know what it is leave your baby and fight off the guilt that is steadily creeping up your throat. One major worrying factor for all new moms returning to work is – How Do I Store my Breast Milk? After all, your little cherub needs it and it is the best gift you can give your child.
Now, the women who want/need to work, take a minute to bless science, because science has given you this wondrous, wow worthy thing called the breast pump. These little gifts from technology lets mothers pump their milk out and store it for their baby’s care takers to feed the little one whenever necessary.
One such new mom Veena is returning to work and she came running to us to ask us how she should store her breast milk and our unfailing SOS moms have come to our rescue.
Anisha Rodrigues Pinto hurried in to help Veena, “Well if you are starting work you can always start combining breast and bottle milk ( i.e. more times breast milks and fewer times bottle milk( supplement). But as you mentioned you want to know about breast milk, which is the best to give your baby. Here is what I know. Well, expressing of breast milk can be done in three ways: 1) hand, 2) using a hand pump (available on firstcry.com), 3) using an electrical pump (available on firstcry.com). If you get heavy milk supply it will be quite easy for you to express by hand specially in the morning. However if you find it difficult ask help from doctor or experienced people to teach you or show you in either of the above 3 ways mentioned. At times expressing by hand can also take a long time in this case the pumps are helpful. You must express your milk in sterilised bottle (available on firstcry.com), which can then be capped and stored in the fridge. Don’t keep it longer than 24 hours. See that it’s frozen as soon as possible. Melt frozen milk and use at once. Never refreeze. You can also keep it in fridge for 5 to 6 hours (in case u get a break and can rush home and get back to work).”
Sonal Maner shared her experience of returning to work when her daughter was just three months old, “Use an electric breast pump to extract milk and store in special sterilised bags in d freezer. Use Medela breast pump and bags, they are the best. You can store milk in the freezer for up to 3 moths after extracting, remove from freezer 45 mins before feed time and keep the bag/bottle in hot water so it can warm up. Do not open d bag/bottle until the baby is ready to be fed. I joined work wen my daughter was just 3 months and used to feed her extracted breast milk until she was 1.5 yrs.” Medela Breast Pumps on FirstCry.com are available here.”
Neha Gaurav puts in her useful tips, “You can use manual breast pump instead of electric one. After extracting milk you can keep it at room temp (27 degrees) for 4 to 6 hours in the refrigerator (towards the corner of tray) for 24 hrs in sterilised bottles only. After taking out the milk from refrigerator , keep the bottle in a pan of warm water for few minutes so that it comes to room temp. But make sure u do not bring the milk in direct contact of heat (gas flame)”.
Noopur Agarwal also reminded us to instruct the care taker, “With an automatic breast pump you can extract all the milk in morning before going to office, then store the milk in sterilised baby bottles and refrigerate them. Tell the person who will be feeding the baby to take out the bottle half an hour before feeding the baby”.
Radhika Varun Soni also reiterated the best method to store breast milk, “You can use breast pump of your choice n refrigerate the milk in sterilized bottle and warm the bottle in hot water just minutes before he is to be fed.”
A lot of advice comes in the way of new moms, but the best ones are from peers who have been mothers themselves. Being a working mom can bring whole host of challenges, but it is also a really satisfying role to play.

Food jag – a common eating behaviour where the kid only wants to eat one food item for every meal. More often than not, it’s the toddlers and preschoolers who tend go on food jags and only like foods that are of a certain colour or texture. This behaviour is usually impulsive. At times, it can be so sudden that the kid would decide to hate even the foods they loved till one day prior.
Fries suddenly become their favourite ‘vegetable’. Anything green is met with clenched teeth and a loathful face. Whining stops only when a dessert appears and chocolate comes to be considered as a separate food group. While this behaviour is normal, parents should deal with it patiently.
Research suggests that it takes at least 10 – 15 tries before a picky kid eats, or at least gets to like a new food. Also, the lost affinity for any food often returns after a gap of around a fortnight. Our point: Don’t be pushy, but persistent in helping your child love new foods. Although it is a frustrating phase in your kid’s development, understand that it’ll get better with time.
Our SOS Moms share their opinions on dealing with picky eaters
We have Rajnideep Sandhu, who suggests, “Try to take your meals with your baby. Because I have seen that children always want to taste from others plates, though they make a mess, but it’s OK with us.. Isn’t it? ”
Prabha Peri, mum of a 2-year-old, says, “Try to fill his plate with different food items neatly garnished and in colourful or attractive cups or plates.. Once he tries to taste a single item and if he feels it tasty, he will definitely start eating it.. I tried the same with my 2-year-old.”
One of our SOS Moms, Pratibha Gautam, came up with a fantastic idea of mixing the kid’s favourite food with the other food you want him to eat. This will disguise the new food in a way that your kid will down it chop-chop.
Last, we have Anima Bhardwaj, who says, “If he has started picking up food on his own and could eat it, try giving him finger food. Whatever you want him to try, make it in the shape of small balls or small sticks that he could pick up easily. Let him make a mess… Kids enjoy it! Just put the food in front of him and leave him alone with it. Don’t sit in front of him or force him to eat… Let him take his time.”
If you’re very concerned about what your picky toddler eats, maintain a diary of all the food and drink items he has over a week. Make sure he has something from each of the four main food groups, i.e. starch/carbohydrates, proteins, dairy and fruits and veggies. If you know that he has eaten food from all these food groups, you shouldn’t be worrying about his nutrition.
Sometimes, it’s alright to allow the picky eater to choose foods that appeal to them. When averaged over several meals, you’ll realise that they choose well. Trust those little bodies and discern that the child’s world and his gastronomic horizons will expand as he grows and starts attending preschool.
Many mothers face this problem when their babies start to teethe. Your baby’s gums are sensitive, irritated and even in pain when they start to grow their first set of teeth. They often find relief when they can bite or chew on something. There is nothing much you can do to help them except massage their gums with a teething gel and allow your baby to bite on something clean and soft like a teething toy or even your finger.
We received a lot of replies on our Facebook page from our rocking SOS moms to help mommy Pooja in her situation.
- Gently unlatch the baby- Insert your finger in the corner of your baby’s mouth between her gums and get her to unlatch from the breast immediately when she bites. Your bay will realise that she will have to stop feeding if she bites.
- Warn gently and firmly – Unlatch your baby and give her a little strict talk by using a firm voice. Try not to react by shouting or crying in pain so as not to scare your little one away from feeding. Just a gentle warning followed by a hug and restarting the feeding should suffice.
- Use Nipple Shield – You can buy a nipple shield or guard to use over your nipple. The baby will not have direct contact with your skin, even if she bites.
- Feed only when baby is hungry – Feed your baby only when she shows the signs of hunger. Some babies find breastfeeding as a means of being close to their mom and often end up chewing on the nipple, if they are not really hunger. Unlatch the baby as soon as she is finished feeding. Also, stop feeding if you notice your baby falling asleep. You might get bitten if she falls asleep and tries to close her mouth shut.
- Change positions – Try changing positions, or try to shift the baby to the other breast or try feeding in a different place. Sit in a quite, peaceful place where your baby won’t be distracted easily. She may bite unintentionally if she is distracted with the sounds and things around her that are stimulating.
- Pull closer – If you notice that your baby finds it amusing to bite you and biting has become her habit, time the feeding time and pull your baby closer to your breast to make her stop feeding as soon as her time is up. Her nose being too close to your breast will make it difficult to breathe for her and she will have to open her mouth as a reflex.
- Top up with formula – While most mothers and doctors advise to continue breast feeding even if it hurts, sometimes it may not be possible for the mother. Breastfeeding is a personal choice and there are a number of reasons to supplement with formula feeding. If you decide to give your baby the formula milk, don’t feel guilty over it. Ultimately, you will do what is best for you and your little one.
- Pump and feed – If you can’t tolerate the biting anymore but still want to keep giving your baby your breast milk, you can always do so by expressing it with breast pump and feeding through a bottle.
- Make sure you are producing enough milk to satiate your baby’s hunger. She may be biting in an attempt to get more milk, if you are not producing enough for her.
What if your baby refuses formula milk?
- Some babies are not that fond of formula and refuse it straight away at the first offering. But keep trying different brands, different formula feeding timings with your doctor’s advice.
- In the beginning, you can mix some part formula milk with your expressed breast milk and feed it to your baby. As your baby gets used to the taste, she may start liking it. Gradually increase the portion of formula milk into the breast milk.
- Apply some formula milk around your nipple when you breastfeed your baby, to introduce her to the taste of the formula.
- Don’t force your baby to drink formula as she may not yet be ready to let go of the comfort of breastfeeding. Wait for few more days and try to introduce the formula again.
- Don’t formula-feed when she is too hungry. Give her the breast milk when she is crying of hunger and offer the formula milk in between the breast feeds. She is most likely to refuse the formula when she is sleepy or feeling low.

One of the biggest problems that a mommy faces with her young kid is making him eat a sufficient amount of food every day. It’s a considerable challenge for her to deal with her fussy eater and the problem doesn’t end with mealtimes at home. The story still continues for those mothers who send their kid to a day care. Their kid will not only be a fussy eater but may also choose to eat only at the day care and not at home. Strange but true!
Dealing with this problem is even more challenging. A few tips listed below can prove helpful to these mommies:
- Such a phenomenon occurs potentially because in a day care a child is surrounded by other kids and all of them eat in a group. A group activity encourages them to finish their meals without any fuss. So one of the best ways to tackle the problem can be – ask all the members in the family to have dinner together with the kid. This will give him the same feeling as that of a day care meal time, says Deepshikha Roy.
- “Let the baby eat on his own. He will relish it and meal time will become fun. It will be messy for sure but you can always clean it up”, says Nidhi Jain.
- “Play some rhymes on television or laptop, or, put on his favorite cartoon program during his meal time”, says Sandhya Prasad.
- “Go creative and present the meal in an interesting way. For instance, make chocolate monster paratha or their favourite home-made paratha pizza or fruity pancakes”, suggests Nandini Rathore.
- “Let your kid ask for the meal on his own. Also, ensure that there is at least a gap of 4-5 hours between the two meals. If the kids is hungry, he will definitely eat a good amount of food”, says Payal Chhajer.
- “Ask your kid to give you a bite and then you give him the next. He will enjoy this at least for some time”, says Anamika Chauhan.
- Encourage your kid to have a competition, of finishing the food first, with you.

Sabita Padubidri wrote to us about a problem she has with her 2 month old son, she says that he does not sleep well either in the morning or in the night because of which she’s having sleepless nights and days.
Also, her child has a habit of sucking his thumb. He does not take formula milk as she doesn’t produce enough milk.
We put this issue across our community of moms to weigh in on the same and have incorporated their responses here:
Breast Feeding is the best for your baby and Fenugreek (methi) ranks high among the ‘must haves’ for nursing mothers. This is due to the presence of diosgenin in the spice which increases milk production in lactating mothers. You can either have its seeds or leaves in your daily diet. You should also increase the intake of Cumin (jeera), pulses, almond, dry fruits, garlic, milk and milk products to enhance milk generation. Moreover, eating raw papaya curry & drinking rice water, which is prepared in traditional way (i.e cooking rice in additional amount of water), can also serve as a solution.
Bani Pavithra SriRam suggets that you can also consume lactation boosting pills/powder like ‘Lactare’, an ayurvedic medicine, to boost lactation.
A few alternate methods to feed your baby milk are:
Soak a small clean and soft cotton ball in milk and squeez 3-5 drops into his mouth slowly at a time and repeate this for 60 to 80ml of milk. As you said he doesn’t like bottles, this will help fill his stomach temporarily.
Try Playtex VentAire bottles for nursing your baby, these have many advantages like less amount of air gulped in by baby, angular design helps in proper placement during feeding, etc.
Thumb-sucking is normal in babies and most kids stop on their own at age 3 to 6 years. Neverthless, inadequate milk intake by a baby may also be a cause of thumb-sucking. So, you can expect it to decrease gradually once your baby starts getting sufficient milk.
One of the reasons for baby’s sleepless nights and days can be his empty stomach. In such a case, the above mentioned alternative feeding methods can prove conducive.
Also, you can give a nice warm coconut oil massage to your baby and follow it with warm water bath before putting him to sleep. Re-creating some soothing sensations, movements and snug environment of the womb will help him doze off faster.

Kanika Modi wrote to us and told us about a concern she has for her 7 month old son. She says that her son has lost his appetite and weight since a week. Also, he has loose motions, 10-15 times a day due to which the private area has turned red and the baby has become cranky and irritated. She is concerned and has asked us for some advice.
We asked our community of helpful moms for their suggestions and included their comments below.
If a child is ill, the first thing to do is take him to the doctor immediately to rule out any serious illnesses. Once your doctor has started treatment, you can use home remedies to make the child more comfortable.
Feed the child light foods – like dal pani, rice water, coconut water, apple or banana mash, a few spoons of pomegranate juice – that are easy to digest and will not cause discomfort. Give him ORS (boiled water with a pinch of salt and sugar) and lots of fluids to ensure that he does not get dehydrated because of the loose motions.
Apply a diaper rash cream, like Siloderm, Protectoderm or Mothercare rash cream, on the baby’s private parts to prevent the rash from getting worse. Avoid diapers. Apply coconut oil every so often for some relief from the rash. Wash the baby’s bottom with water instead of using tissues which can aggravate the rash.
If your child has started teething, it could cause some of these symptoms. For the baby’s tummy upsets while teething, you can start a homeopathic medicine called BC21, after taking your baby to a registered homeopathic physician. You can also start homeopathic calcium tablets, called Calcarea Phosphorica.
Rub mugli ghutti on the baby’s teeth regularly twice a day. Give your baby safe toys and teethers to chew on to relieve the pain of teething. You might also want to ask your pediatrician if your baby needs the rota virus vaccination.

She wants to know how she can make him have his milk from a cup. She is concerned and has asked us for some advice.
We posted the question to our ever-helpful community of parents and have included their advice below.
It is not unusual for kids to resist new things. You might want to try a transition from a bottle to a Sipper cup, instead of a normal cup. A sippy cup with a straw might be easier to drink out of.
Get your child an attractive sippy cup with a cartoon they like. You could try adding sugar or jaggery in the drink to tempt them. You could also try distracting him with television or stories or songs.
Put him in a group with other kids who drink from cups. Also encourage other family members to drink from cups in front of him. He is more likely to try to imitate them and want to drink from a cup.
The main issue is not to get stressed about it. Every child is different and transitions to a new behaviour in their own time. It might take time and patience on your part, but your child will ultimately start drinking from a cup when he is ready to do so.

We asked our ever-helpful community of Moms to provide Sakshi advice for her son and have included their responses below.
Not all kids take to a change of food easily. As long as your child is growing and healthy, and eating her normal foods, you can continue giving her what she likes.
But if you want to try something new, you could start with something like ragi. Also try giving her dal ka pani or dalia, sweet or salted according to her taste. You could also try mashed bananas, which most kids love.
You could try to nurse or bottle-feed before giving the baby one or two teaspoons of pureed solid food or cereal mixed with formula or breast milk. Start with a small amount of food using a soft-tipped plastic spoon to avoid injuring your child’s gums.
Try introducing her to new foods while you and others in the family are eating it. Babies love to imitate their parents and older siblings and are more likely to accept food that you are eating.
Try distracting your baby with music or cartoons, while introducing her to new foods. The trick is not to give up. Just keep trying new things every few days or so and you will find something that works for your baby.

Jyoti Awasthi wrote to us and told us about a problem concerning her 3 months old son. Her son spills a lot of milk each time after she feeds him; she is concerned for her baby’s health and has asked us for an advice.
We put this across our community of mothers and incorporated their responses into the advice below.
It is a natural phenomenon that babies adopt when they take more feed than required, so the excess milk comes out as spills in form of curd. Make sure that you burp him after every feed by carrying the baby on the shoulder in the standing position and gently pat his back.
It is very important for your child to burp after each feed so don’t rest him down immediately after feeding at least for the first 15 minutes. Spilling of milk could be as a result of gas and indigestion, in this case you can rub heeng (soaked with water) on his stomach, this will help reduce gas.
Gas problem can be reduced with spoonful of mixture of ajwain and saunf (fennel seeds) in boiled water and see the difference. And also do not fold your son’s legs immediately after feeding; it creates pressure on the stomach.
There is no need to worry. If still in doubt consult your doctor.

Sindhuja Pradeep Kumar wrote to us and told us about her 7 month old daughter who doesn’t like to drink water. She says that her daughter just spits the water out and starts crying if you try to feed her water. She is otherwise healthy but Mrs. Kumar is worried about this habit of her little girl’s and asked us for some advice.
We approached our community of mothers and asked them what they thought she should do about it. Here is what they said.
Do not force your child to drink water. She will form an unpleasant association with it. You could instead try putting mishri (crystallized sugar lumps), honey or palm candy in the water and reduce it over a period of time, or give your child fresh fruit juice instead of water. You can also soak khajur (dates) overnight, filter them and feed them to the baby.
Try boiling saunf (fennel seeds), mulethi (liquorice) or dalchini (cinnamon) in water to add some flavour. You could also wash a leaf of tulsi in her water bottle. It is healthy and might get her to try it out of curiosity. You can put roasted ajwain in boiled water, filter it and give it to your baby. You could also use Electral if they like the taste.
Ask all family members to drink water in front of the baby and say good things about it. Babies love to observe and imitate their parents. Also use a sipper cup as they might not like drinking water from a feeding bottle.

She also says that her super active baby adamantly refuses to be potty trained. She is worried for her baby’s health and hygiene and has asked for some advice.
We asked our community of experienced moms for advice and these are the suggestions they sent us.
Most kids are fussy eaters. They would rather play than eat. Often they are just seeking attention and if you run after them, you will only be encouraging such behaviour. Keep them active so that they get hungry and want to eat by themselves.
Eat your meals in front of them and encourage them to feed themselves. Serve their food in attractive cutlery and make it look colourful and yummy. Some kids forget to eat and get cranky. Don’t wait for them to ask you for food. Set a routine for meals and feed them at the same time every day.
You can start cutting down on their milk intake, giving it only twice a day so that they feel hungry and eat more often. Milk takes hours to digest and fills them up very quickly. Keep a gap of at least 3 hours between meals. Try giving them different kinds of food, such as chapati with ghee, or salads with cheese.
Add more variety to their meals. Make up stories about their foods while you are feeding them. It will make the meal more entertaining. Some kids eat better while distracted by the TV, but its best to avoid getting them into that routine as it creates bad food habits.
Make sure they do not have worms. You can give them omum water for few days for deworming and to increase appetite. You can also give Bonnisan ayurvedic drops to improve their appitite. Also keep an eye on their hemoglobin levels and ensure they are not anemic.
Most kids do not respond to potty training until they are 2.5 years old. You can make them drink lukewarm water in the morning and after meals. Take them to the bathroom and make them sit on the potty with their favourite toy. Go here for more potty training tips.
There are no formulas or instant solutions for these two problems. It will take time and patience to change these behaviours.
