5 Clothing Brands That Don’t Accentuate Gender Stereotypes

Some people like to dress their daughters all in pink and their boys all in blue. But what if, as a parent, you visualise a different style for your child, irrespective of their gender? In recent years, there has been a lot of buzz about gender stereotypes. Far fetched as it seems, sometimes even clothing can push children into them! This is why it’s heartening to see new, gender-neutral clothing companies getting into your children’s closets.1

So, if you are interested in learning about such clothing, today we are presenting you the top five clothing brands that fight gender stereotypes in a colorful and also stylish way!

1. Sewing Circus

This fantastic clothing brand was established in the United Kingdom and was founded by Francesca Aiken, mom to a little girl called Scarlett. This clothing brand began at the kitchen table where Francesca decided to sew a few dresses with science-related pictures on them. This was after she noticed that her daughter couldn’t find girl-clothing with themes like space, dinosaurs or trains. This mom then decided to change everything and make such clothing with her own hands! Sewing Circus soon became pretty popular, and today these handmade and original clothes are being sold all over Europe, Canada, the United States, Australia and even New Zealand.

2. Climbing Trees

Climbing Trees is another super fun and adorable clothing brand for both boys and girls. Still very fresh (it started its business in the summer of 2015), this clothing brand is making various t-shirts with funny and gender-free images all kids will love. The company was, again, founded by a mom Cheryl Rickman. She was inspired by her daughter who loved dinosaurs and football, but couldn’t find clothing that could express her hobbies. What’s more, the social mission doesn’t stop there either. A part of their profit goes to a non-profit organization which plants trees.

3. The Children’s Place

Although this clothing company is not exactly gender neutral, it deserves a mention. Here, you can find pink flowery dresses for your girls, and baby blue jumpsuits for your boys. However, the Children’s Place also has a section called Unisex in the Baby department where you can find a pretty wide selection of gender neutral clothing for your little ones! This clothing brand can suit all parents – those who care about gender stereotypes as well as those who don’t. Moreover, the price ranges here are wide too, making the clothing affordable for all. The good news is that these Children’s Place coupons can also come in quite handy!

4. Quirkie Kids

This company started their business in March 2014. They have been selling pink shirts with various artwork, but relax – these shirts are made both for girls and boys! The owner is of the opinion that pink is just as usual and standard a color as green, yellow or blue, and there are tons of boys who love this color! This is how a company with blindness for gender-related colors was born. Today, on their website, you can buy many colorful and patterned shirts for all kids – no matter their sex.

5. Svaha

The Svaha clothing brand was established by Jaya Halepete Iyer of Virginia, whose 3-year-old daughter wanted to be an astronaut when she grew up. Her love for space, and the lack of clothing that could show it, inspired her mom. Hence, a company with tons of beautiful clothing themed on science-related topics was founded. You can now shop for shirts with design motifs like sports, dinosaurs, space (of course) and even construction equipment. So if your little one loves any of these, you know where to head!

Size Tag

Most clothing brands have a size tag on them. Therefore, in all probability a 1 year old would wear clothes with 1 year or 12 months written on them. However, as all children grow differently, a bigger baby might require a slightly bigger size, while a small baby could do with a size smaller.

It is also a good idea to have some formal or dressy outfits for special occasions and going out. This saves last minute trouble of having to buy clothes in a hurry.

How To Buy: Clothes For 6-Month Olds

6 month old babyBaby clothing comes in standard sizes. However, all babies are of a different size and shape and moreover, each brand has a specific sizing standard. Thus, it is very important to consult a baby clothes size chart and check your 6-month olds weight before investing in clothes.

Some babies tend to grow quickly and fit straight into bigger clothes while some are slower at 6 months, and this it is best to decide individually, rather than buying a standard 6 to 9 month outfit. The article discusses basic smart guidelines to keep in mind when investing in 6 month old clothes.

Ignore Standard Sizes:

This makes it difficult for parents to buy clothes for their little ones. However it is not that difficult as most major baby clothes brand carry a tag on them that includes the weight and length information of the baby for which it would be apt.

Moreover, most brands have their own sizing charts that can usually been seen at the baby clothes section or on their websites. Considering the baby weight and length when buying clothes would eventually save you from wasting money on baby clothing that may not fit or be used for a very short span of time.

Buy Big:

You may also consider buying bigger clothes unless you are buying pajamas or sleepwear. It sounds absurd to buy clothes that would stick out or not fit appropriately.

However, babies tend to grow out so quickly that they would be perfect in just a couple of weeks. This should surely be followed when buying baby gifts and when you are unsure of how big the baby is.

As a general rule, most 6 month old babies can wear a 9 to 12 month olds outfit. However, it is important to take into consideration seasonal clothing as winter clothes are of no use in summer and vice versa.

Buy Early:

Consider pre-buying clothes of different sizes so that you have a variety of sizes to choose from at any particular age. This way you can also save on some money by shopping during festive or sale season or when you see some attractive bargains.

Do Not Overstock:

Ensure you only invest in what you really need and what you would really use. Do not overstock on any particular size and ensure you’ve got different sizes to cater to your 6 month olds growth.

As a general note, for the 6 month age group you will need a couple of long sleeved or short sleeved bodysuits depending upon the weather, a couple of turtleneck t-shirts or shirts and pants, some outfits for going out, long sleeved jumpers and jackets for cold days, comfortable sleepwear for the night, cotton or warm beanie hats, mittens (if your baby uses them) and lots of socks and booties.

Good luck shopping for your 6-month old baby. Let us know what your favorite items are from the store.

How To Buy: Clothes For Newborns

clothes for newbornsEven though shopping for newborns sounds easy, with all the cute attire that is available in the stores nowadays, a little planning goes a long way.

It is very important to cover and protect your baby from head to toe so as to help them adjust to life outside the womb.

Newborns can get messy and require a couple of changes of clothing every day. Thus, it is important to ensure their apparel is easy to change. Moreover, they must be comfortable with no hanging cords or ties that they can get entangled in.

The fabrics must be soft to complement their delicate skin. Always ensure that all buttons, strings and tags are on securely as if they come out there may be a risk of choking.

When buying clothes for newborns, it is difficult to predict sizing as many outgrow their newborn clothes very quickly and many large babies totally skip the newborn size and start from 3 to 6 months straight away while some smaller babies may require Tiny Baby or Preemie clothes.

How many outfits you would really require depends on how often you plan to do your laundry. Apart from that the tips below provides a brief guideline of what you really need in the first 6 weeks.

T-shirts and Pants:

You will require about 5 to 7 tee-shirts which have plenty of room in the neck area or alternatively have snaps at the neck to allow easy removal from the head. To pair the tee-shirts, pants or leggings would be required. Ensure stretch waistbands that easily fit over the babies belly and diaper, even when they grow bigger.

One-Piece Outfits:

Again 5 to 7 changes would be handy for sleeping and playing in. These are very convenient as most come with socks and a hood attached.

In warm weather, it can get uncomfortable for your tiny tots to have too many layers of clothing. You can consider investing in a sweater or jacket as per the requirement of your city’s weather.

If you live in colder climes, you may also want to consider buying a snowsuit depending on the weather and also whether you would be taking the baby out and about at such a tiny age.

No matter how trendy your play clothes are, it is important for babies to wear clothes without snaps or seams while they are napping. You may need at least 2 to 3 of these, if not more.

Fleece/Cotton Sacks:

Investing in a cotton or fleece sack, that zips over the baby’s clothes, is also a good way to keep them warm. Moreover, these are much safer than traditional blankets.

Footwear and Hat:

You will need lots of socks and booties to keep your tiny tot’s feet clean and warm. It is also a good idea to have a couple of warm bonnets to keep your baby’s head covered.

Baby Fashion – What’s Trending This Season?

baby fashionHave you ever been curious about what “sugar and spice and everything nice” actually means when it is about kid’s clothing?

Well, today’s babies are no less demanding. Actually, it is the parents who want to give the best to their little ones and once it becomes a trend, it is sure to be followed.

There are unique options available today when it comes to baby clothing and accessories. Fashion is just not restricted to the adult world.

Come this season, and we are looking at some unique fashion for baby clothing.

1. All organic!

All babies this season want to get organic. We are not talking about the 50% organic products that comes in plastic hangers and packaging but a cent percent GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) type organic! This is both a trend and a message that is getting popular in the baby fashion world!

2. Non-solid solid

Try to think of Starry Night by Van Gogh or Matisse for that instance. The theme is that the sky looks just plain blue from a distance but as you get closer, multiple colors reveal themselves.

This is working out well with baby clothing and the fun stripes are making their mark on some of the most celebrated babies in this world. These clothing look as if they simple and subtle pinks and blues but as you get closer, they are actually miniature bumblebee print and tiny stripes.

3. Sophisticated classics

Another fashion trend speaking loud in the baby fashion world are the soft blues and pinks mixed amazingly with cool grays. These really look cool as teenagers would say!

4. Ruffle touch

Again, being subtle is the standard here, but it should be something like under the dress built of the coveral,l and probably the undergarment, but not too much near the face. When it comes to ruffles, less is always more and babies can comfortably sport such a trend!

5. Real clothes

The era of mini dad or mini mom clothing has come to an end and newborns are no more dressed by shrinking down pieces meant for a toddler. We are taking about real baby clothes – designed and meant just for them. Modern babies grow up faster than you realize and we just hope that this trend lasts long.

Baby fashion trends have always been an interesting thing to follow and in all cases, they look cute! So what attire are you putting your little fashionista in this season?
