My Daughter Won’t Stop Sucking Her Thumb: SOS Moms Reply

baby sucking thumbYogitha Dhanashekhar wrote to us and told us about her 1 year old daughter, who frequently puts her thumb in her mouth which leads to her thumb getting swollen.

She says that despite trying everything she is unable to stop her daughter from doing so. She is concerned for her daughter’s wellbeing and has asked for advice.

We put this query to our community of experienced moms and this is the advice they gave us.

Try rubbing some Pudin Hara on her thumb. The strong taste could make her stop sucking. You can also apply neem paste on the thumb as the bitter taste will prevent her from sucking it.

Castor oil or mustard seed paste also works for it’s bad taste. Apply coconut oil for the swollen thumb. You could also try homeopathy as there are medicines to stop this habit.

Try to get your child into the habit of using a soother or teether toys instead of her thumb as thumb-sucking can also become more embarrassing for her as she grows. Distract your child with a toy or put something into her hand when she does this. Or tie a cloth around her hand to discourage her.

You could put some fear of the consequences of thumb sucking into your little one’s mind. For instance, stories of thumbs getting cut off because of sucking might scare them into stopping altogether. But make sure you tell them the truth later.

Make sure she is not feeling insecure as thumb-sucking could be a sign that she is feeling neglected. Give her the attention she needs at this age. It is also a comforting habit at the time of teething. Or she may be hungry or need soothing.

All in all, thumb sucking is not really a big concern and goes away as the child grows up. Preventing it could cause her to repress her feelings, which is not healthy.
