Mums, the first year of baby is probably the most exciting and fast-paced, as it is filled with new achievements and milestones that you will enjoy and get amazed at, and much as other mums have told you, you will almost remember these your entire life!
All babies are special and unique, and achieving milestones is definitely not a by-the-book things, its important to remember that all babies like to take their own time and way to do things and learn. What a baby may be able to at 6 months, another may do at 8 months, and it’s absolutely normal. One baby may crawl first and then learn to sit, another may learn to sit first and then crawl, and some babies may completely skip the crawling part! It’s important, as parents, to give ample time and freedom to your little one to reach these milestones at their own pace.
We did some reading, and here’s a look at what babies may do at a particular month, not necessarily will do…..so relax, and just read this as part of understanding your baby’s developmental pattern.
01st Month: Some babies may start focusing towards a particular sound. Some babies may try and lift their head. Some babies may be able to respond to sound in some way, by crying, becoming quiet or getting startled.
02nd Month: May be able to smile or respond to sound in some way. Many babies are able to make some sounds, other than crying and lift their head a little.
03rd Month: Baby should be able to lift head up properly while lying on stomach. Some babies may make sounds that sound like laughing while some may try and bring hands together.
04th Month: Baby should be able to laugh and lift head up while lying on stomach. Some babies also move their head side-to-side while focusing on something.
06th Month: Your baby should be able to keep the head steady with body when you hold them up to sit. Some babies are able to sit without support.
07th Month: Baby should be able to eat simple finger foods like cookies or vegetable sticks on its own, sit without support and even start to crawl.
08th Month: Baby should be able to stand on their feet when you hold them up, eat finger-foods independently, and even try and pass on toys from one hand to another. Some babies may start the first step towards talking!
09th Month: Some babies may be able to try and sit up on their own and even stand on their own holding on for support. Some babies will learn to way ‘bye’ and try walking on their own holding on to furniture.
10th Month: Baby should be able to stand on its own with support and say first words like ‘mamma’ ‘papa’.
11th Month: Baby starts understanding words like ‘no’, ‘yes’ and ‘eat’, though not necessarily obey the same 😉 Some babies will be able to pick up tiny objects between thumb and finger.
12th Month: Baby should be able to walk holding on to furniture and use different signs and gestures. Many babies will be able to drink independently from sippy cups and play with balls and even roll it back.
Remember – Every baby is special. So do not panic if your baby is not doing these by the month. Give time, give your unconditional love and attention, and soon your little angel will amaze you!
